Overview of Geography Department
Department of Geography at Indira Gandhi Government College, Tezu started its journey on July, 1992 with 1 teacher and 12 students in BA 1st year (Pass Course). Subsequently in the year 1996, honours (now called major) in Geography was introduced. Now in the year 2024, this department is having 6 teachers (including 2 guest faculties) and 200 students.
Highly qualified, well trained and experienced teachers are proud assets of this department. One classroom cum laboratory is there for higher semester students. A well equipped GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory is also there with 22 computers where students learn different GIS software like Arc-GIS (10), QGIS, ERDAS Imagine, SAGA, etc. as part of their syllabus. Average pass percentage in final semester is 98%.
Different programs like workshops, seminars and lectures are conducted regularly by the department, where eminent personalities are invited from different fields. Study Tours are conducted every year for Final semester students at a place of geographical importance. Village/town surveys are also conducted every year to study the socio-economic condition and to prepare project report.
As Geography is very popular subject in this college so the department is planning to start post-graduation course in near future if approved by the Government and the affiliated university.
The department is also planning to start self financing course on Remote Sensing and GIS in near future.
